The Westcliff offers a Walking with Lions Experience
The Westcliff hotel and Suncross Tours are offering an extraordinary opportunity for their guests – to walk with lions and play with lion cubs. This experience, which can be combined with a morning of horse riding in De Tweede Spruit Valley nature reserve, will delight nature loving travellers.
On your morning horseback safari, you are likely to have close sightings of Giraffe, Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Eland, Waterbuck, Kudu, Ostrich, Blesbok, Impala, Red Hartebeest and Warthog. Although these animals are completely wild, they see horse and rider as one unthreatening animal and are not frightened by them.
After a simple yet delicious home-cooked lunch, the lion experience starts with some fascinating facts about the majestic Lion. Before you take them on an exhilarating nature walk, you will find out why they are at the reserve, why they so enjoy their daily walk and how you need to behave whilst walking with them. And then, after the walk, you will have the opportunity to feed the adorable and cuddly baby lion cubs, and to play with them - something they love to do, just like any little kitten.
Some background about De Tweede Spruit Valley nature reserve:–
It was originally a cattle farm before the owners decided to develop it into a wildlife sanctuary and to start breeding lions. The lions are sold to ethical wild life reserves in Southern Africa. These reserves are in desperate need of lions, as there has been a drastic decrease in the lion population due to feline aids, with lions dying mostly of tuberculosis.
For the first year or two of their lives, the lions are kept at De Tweede Spruit Valley nature reserve where they love to go for walks and to play in the open. Because these lions are fairly domesticated - due to their close relationship with humans - when they are taken from the reserve to their new home, they will undergo a phased release into the wild. Their offspring however, will be totally wild with no contact with human beings, and will be fully adapted to surviving on their own in their new habitat.
