Introduction
“The Greater Johannesburg Area (incorporating Johannesburg, Soweto and the east and west Rand mining conurbations), houses an estimated 7 million people, most of whom are African. Much of the remainder comprise a colourful melting pot of Europeans whose forbears came to the Rand to seek their fortune in the great 1886 gold rush. This melding of African and European, combined with the economic growth spurt which followed the fall of apartheid has resulted in a dynamic, sophisticated and cosmopolitan city with strong global links and a pumping urban-African culture.”
